Peeing when you sneeze is such a common experience that entire TikTok trends have been dedicated to it. Moms in trampoline parks eye each other knowingly as they rush to the bathroom every 15 minutes, whether they need to go or not. Kids call imploringly from bounce houses, “Moooooooooom!!!! Come jump with meeeee!” As mom shakes her head and adds an ounce to the weight of her mom guilt.
That evening, when dad approaches mom waggling his eyebrows in the most endearing way, she’ll add an ounce to the weight of her wife guilt thinking how she’d rather just eat ice cream and go to sleep; physical intimacy is just too much work.
Enter platelet rich plasma (PRP).
These common pelvic floor problems are most commonly caused by childbearing, but can also be caused by a lifetime of running or other impact sports, chronic coughs, or smoking. All of these leave the tissues and muscles on the floor of the pelvis thinned and weak.
Traditional treatments for these common complaints are typically kegels (squeezing your pelvic floor muscles) or surgery. In order for kegel exercises to be effective, you’d have to perform about 100 per day. Surgery, while effective, carries with it risk, expense and down time.
PRP is extremely safe, and has shown promising results in preliminary studies in reducing stress incontinence (peeing when you sneeze) as well as sexual function including arousal and orgasm. To see one such study, visit https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-020-80598-2.
During this treatment, I will draw your blood and spin it in a centrifuge to separate the PRP from other blood products. You will apply a numbing cream to the external genitalia so the treatment is comfortable. A few milliliters of your PRP will be injected into the clitoris and the vulvar wall.
There are very few risks of this procedure, the most likely being that it does not cure your stress incontinence completely, but most patients do see improvement in their symptoms. You can expect improvement in urinary symptoms and sexual function the next day.
